Meeting “Amigos del Camino de Santiago” association

?? On Friday, the 7th of October; the team of volunteers in Lugo had the opportunity to visit and talk with the chief of the “Amigos del Camino de Santiago” association based in Lugo. The association was born in 1992 (this year they are celebrating the 25th anniversary) and its aim is to preserve the spirit of the traditional pilgrimage and to assist the pilgrims by organizing some specific activities such as preserving and restoring the path and the navigational system of the way, especially the part in Galicia. They also organize many short hikes along shorter parts of different Caminos every weekend and lead a longer cultural trip once a year for the members of the association.

It is important to mention that the people running the association are all volunteers that are working there in their free time driven by their passion for the Camino.

Since the head supervisor of the association has done all the Caminos more than once, we got many useful tips and information about the history of each Camino, the first pilgrimages and a detailed explanation about how to get the “compostela” (the document that certifies that a pilgrim has completed the Camino de Santiago) at the end of one’s camino, after a documented hike of at least 100 km. We also had the chance to get to know and also try on the traditional pilgrims’ clothes and walking sticks with the well-known empty pumpkin for water, hanging from them.

Overall it was a really interesting and positive experience for us and we are really excited to walk a part of Camino with them the following weekend!

?? El viernes 7 de octubre; el equipo de voluntarios de Lugo tuvo la oportunidad de visitar y conversar con el responsable de la asociación “Amigos del Camino de Santiago” con sede en Lugo. La asociación nació en 1992 (este año celebran el 25 aniversario) y su objetivo es preservar el espíritu de la tradicional peregrinaje y ayudar a los peregrinos organizando algunas actividades específicas como la conservación y restauración del camino y el sistema de navegación de el camino, especialmente la parte en Galicia. También organizan muchas caminatas cortas a lo largo de diferentes Caminos cada fin de semana y organizan un viaje cultural más largo una vez al año para los miembros de la asociación.

Es importante mencionar que las personas que dirigen la asociación son todos voluntarios que trabajan allí en su tiempo libre impulsados ​​por su pasión por el Camino.

Dado que el supervisor principal de la asociación ha hecho todos los Caminos más de una vez, recibimos muchos consejos e información útiles sobre la historia de cada Camino, las primeras peregrinaciones y una explicación detallada sobre cómo obtener la “compostela” (el documento que certifica que un peregrino ha realizado el Camino de Santiago) al final del camino, tras una caminata documentada de al menos 100 km. También tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer y probarnos las tradicionales ropas de peregrinos y los bastones con la conocida calabaza vacía para agua, colgando de ellos.

En general, fue una experiencia realmente interesante y positiva para nosotros y estamos muy emocionados de caminar una parte del Camino con ellos el próximo fin de semana.
